Assess literacy, then let the assessment write the comment

For BC teachers in Grades 2–4. Choose a level on the Provincial Proficiency Scale for each of six literacy strands, and this page assembles a Written Learning Update comment in the three parts BC requires — strengths, areas for growth, and ways to support learning — using the language of the BC curriculum. Add one real example from the student’s work, and it’s ready to paste into MyEd BC.

Emerging Developing Proficient Extending Proficient is the goal — a complete understanding of the expected learning.

Start with the student

Grade matters in two places: Grade 4 writers are expected to communicate in sentences and paragraphs (Grades 2–3: sentences), and Grade 4 readers use a variety of comprehension strategies before, during, and after reading. The wording below adjusts when you switch grades. If you leave the name blank, the comment uses “This student.”

The Provincial Proficiency Scale

The four-point scale used to communicate student learning in Grades K–9, in the Ministry’s wording. Every point describes the student’s understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.

Initial understanding

Emerging

The student demonstrates an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.

Learning is beginning. The student is working on foundational pieces and needs support and more time.

Partial understanding

Developing

The student demonstrates a partial understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.

Learning is underway. Pieces are in place, and consistency and independence are growing.

Complete understanding

Proficient

The student demonstrates a complete understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.

This is the goal for the expected learning — demonstrated consistently, without meaning perfection.

Sophisticated understanding

Extending

The student demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.

Understanding is shown with greater depth and complexity — not a greater amount of work.

Assessing fairly: students do not necessarily begin each year or each unit at Emerging, and Proficient is not the end of learning — a student who is Proficient is encouraged to dig deeper toward Extending. Extending is depth, not a bonus or a reward, and it is not the goal for every student; Proficient is.

BC foundations behind the strands

The six strands are a teacher-friendly breakdown of the two curricular competencies that organize English Language Arts in Grades 2, 3, and 4 — so an assessment tick in the builder is already curriculum language.

Comprehend and connect (reading, listening, viewing)

Students use sources of information and prior knowledge to make meaning, use reading, listening, and viewing strategies, engage actively as listeners, viewers, and readers, and connect personal experience and knowledge to stories and other texts.

  • Strand 1 — Decoding & word knowledge
  • Strand 2 — Reading fluency & engagement
  • Strand 3 — Comprehension

Create and communicate (writing, speaking, representing)

Students exchange ideas and perspectives to build shared understanding, plan and create a variety of communication forms for different purposes and audiences, and create stories and other texts.

  • Strand 4 — Oral language
  • Strand 5 — Writing: ideas & structure
  • Strand 6 — Writing: sentences, spelling & conventions

What every Written Learning Update includes

  • The student’s level on the Provincial Proficiency Scale for the area of learning
  • Descriptive feedback on strengths
  • Descriptive feedback on areas for growth
  • Ways to support learning at school and at home
  • Student self-assessment of the Core Competencies and goal setting

What changes from Grade 2 to Grade 4

  • Grade 2–3: communicate using sentences and most conventions of Canadian spelling, grammar, and punctuation; use developmentally appropriate reading, listening, and viewing strategies.
  • Grade 4: communicate using sentences and paragraphs; use a variety of comprehension strategies before, during, and after reading, including identifying main ideas and supporting details and using text features.

Printable pack

The same wording, on paper. The one-student tracker below fills in from your builder selections — add your evidence notes, then print. The comment bank prints the strength sentence and next step for every strand and level, and the blank worksheet is for assessing away from a screen.

To print, use your browser’s Print command (or “Save as PDF”): this page prints cleanly — your assembled comment first, then the proficiency scale, the filled-in tracker, the comment bank, and the blank worksheet — without the on-screen buttons and controls.
